INTERVIEW WITH THE BAND PASSENGER

From the feature Interview with the band PASSENGER

Passenger

IT may sound strange to many but breakthrough band Passenger believe that busking before a gig can help connect with a whole new audience. In fact they trusted this theory so much so that on a recent nationwide tour the indie sounding five-piece act made a habit of busking before every show to try and gather a few more fans.
Tried and tested the theory worked, Mike explains: “It’s brilliant because people that don’t usually go to our gigs and are exposed to our music, it’s an amazing thing to do. You really connect with people; there are no lights or stage etc.”

Frontman Mike Rosenberg and song-writing partner Andrew Phillips are at the creative core of Passenger. Creative being the operative word, Mike and Andrew made a decision from the start that they did not want to be managed by a major record label, in order to retain complete creative control. After being spotted by their management company they effectively set up their own record label.

Andrew explains: “We created a record label with our management. They funded us through making the record and stuff and it was always been the idea to try and avoid the major record label scene. We’ve been really lucky because it means that we get a great deal of creative control.”

The journey of Passenger all began about four years ago when Mike and Andrew met at a Benefit gig in London. The two got chatting about guitar, folk and electronica music. Their creativity sparked a unique idea - by combining the three genres together they found an exceptional sound. They made the dream reality and have never looked back since. Their new album Wicked Man’s Rest, is OUT NOW on the ChalkMark label. Mike claims to take a unique approach when it comes to song writing. In a world teeming with self-absorbed song writing, the 23-year-old frontman prefers to observe and reflect on other people lives through his lyrics.
