This track was written by Motown song writers – Norman Whitfield and Barett Strong. It was recorded by several Motown acts but the two versions that stand out were recorded by Gladys Knight and the Pips, and Marvin Gaye. This is the Marvin Gaye version. It was the most successful Motown single of the 60s.
The band would have been the legendary Motown session musicians known as the Funk Brothers.
The keyboard player was Earl Van Dyke. On Grapevine he used a Fender Rhodes, but he also used a Wurlitzer and a Hammond B-3 organ in the studio.
James Jamerson was the bassist, and he used a Fender Precision bass nicknamed the Funk Machine. He usually DI’ed his bass in the studio, and live he often used an Ampeg B-15 amp.
The drummer would have been Willian “Benny” Benjamin or Richard “Pistol” Allen. The drum kit at Motown’s studio was made of Gretsch, Ludwig, Slingerland, and Rogers parts.
The guitar was probably a Telecaster. The Funk Brothers’ most regular guitarists were Robert White, Joe Messina, and Eddie “Chank” Willis. Gibson guitars, such as the L5 and ES-335, were popular with the Funk Brothers, but Joe Messina was the only one of the three to regularly use a Telecaster.
