FOALS AT BESTIVAL
INDIE funk five-piece band Foals were once described as, “One of the hottest new bands in indie they deserve your immediate and total adulation” by NME.
The dance-punk band originally from Oxford has had a lot to live up to in their two-year history. But after touring extensively throughout the country as well as the prospect of supporting Bloc Party in their upcoming tour - the Foals have managed to gather a fine number of fans in their pony pen.
Their long awaited debut album is due for release soon on Trangressive Records, produced by Dave Sitek whose credits include Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars and Celebration.
It has been noted in the past that when performing live, “Foals don’t so much fizz with energy as explode like a well-shaken bottle champagne”
Talking to SMHTP at Bestival, Foals front-man Yannis Philippakis explained how he thinks it is impossible to capture a live sound on an album.
He said: “The stuff we do in the studio sounds like nothing we do live. I don’t understand bands who want to try and capture a live sound; you’re never going manage it so why waste the money? I think it’s best to do something where you can actually manipulate the tools at hand. Like for us we like the idea of a chaotic visceral live show, almost violent. Yet on a record I would want to listen to something more diverse that shows different facets of a band and one where they are exploring the technology available to them. Do you think people like Jimi Hendrix if around now would go into a studio and just record a live sound? They wouldn’t.”

Ungdomskulen
Ever Records were first introduced to the music of UNGDOMSKULEN, three puerile minded individuals from Bergen, West Norway, - Kristian Stockhaus, Øyvind Solheim, Frode Kvinge Flatland – in early 2006. The three mp3s we received demanded they be played repeatedly, at ridiculously loud volume, until they shredded our speakers. We wrote to the band and arranged to fly in to see them play. “We could meet for dinner beforehand,” we said.
