Good question Keith!
The short answer is - if the drum sounds good, it's right...the long answer is:

Tuning the drum is very important to get a good sound - heres how it's done...

Place the head on the drum (making sure there are no sharp bits in the shell…!)
Place the hoop on top and finger tighten all the lugs.
Push down on the center of the head with bottom of your hand to create creases.
Tighten the lugs to get rid of all the creases. Start with one, move to the opposite one then move one along and repeat till they're all done.

Put a cloth on the opposite head to the one you’re tuning. Tap the head next to each lug and make sure each one has the same pitch harmonic ringing out. We use Harmonics to tune drums much like a guitarist/bass player would tune.

Once both heads are in tune, experiment with tightening the bottom/top heads to get different pitches. The bottom head will drastically change the pitch of the drum so don’t over do it!

Keep in mind the size of the drum e.g. don’t try and get a 14” drum to sound like an 8” drum. It won’t happen…

You can also buy a "Drum Dial" here -

If there are any bits of this you're not sure of - feel free to ask!

Hope thats of some help to you.
